The Southwest Pickers was born in the summer of 1981. The founding members were Steve Kieth, Terry Conrad and Joni Conrad of Madrid, New Mexico. At Madrid the three produced acoustic music shows on their own before establishing the Southwest Pickers. Their idea was simple - to find other people to share the work of putting on regular bluegrass concerts.

Also, the Southwest Pickers wanted to attract more national acts to put New Mexico on the Bluegrass Circuit. But it was emphasize that there would not be any exclusion to local musicians.

So twice a month, at the Madrid Supply Company (a remodeled store used as a concert hall on Madrid's main street), during the fall and monthly in the winter, the Southwest Pickers brought old-fashioned music and upbeat Sunday afternoons to the Supply Company.

Through the years Southwest Picker's, now officially known as Southwest Traditional and Bluegrass Music Association, has developed into a sound organization providing acoustic music to New Mexico and regional audiences on a yearly basis and promoting the furtherance of acoustic music by providing jams and workshops for all ages.

Bringing in national, regional and local artists for the pleasure of anyone interested in acoustic music, concerts and festivals may vary from bluegrass, folk, celtic to traditional New Mexico and original compositions.

The Southwest Pickers sponsors acoustic performances throughout the year. Our main function is the Festival we hold in August every year, at the Santa Fe, New Mexico rodeo grounds. This is a Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday function. For more information on this great event go to FESTIVALS.

Southwest Pickers has established monthly jam sessions for all acoustic players and listeners to enjoy. These jams are open to all ages, beginners, intermediate and advanced players. Two of the Jams take place on the first Sunday of each month. Another takes place every Sunday. We also provide instructional sessions where amateur musicians can learn techniques from local musicians and visiting professionals.
